چکیده

The outstanding features of the action curve in Nitella are explained as due to the movement of potassium ions accompanied by increase of permeability. This may be useful as a working hypothesis since it accounts not only for the normal behavior but also for many striking deviations which will be treated in subsequent papers. The views here set forth are in harmony with the local circuit theory of stimulation.

Of Action Current in Nitella

In the first paper of this series the general features of the action curve of Nitella were interpreted as due to the movement of potassium ions accompanied by an increase in permeabili ty. Can this idea explain the variations which the action curve exhibits? For tbds purpose we may consider the successive movements. We may begin with a fairly typical action curve I such as is shown in Fig. 1. T...

The Influence of H+ on the Membrane Potential and Ion Fluxes of Nitella

The resting membrane potential of the Nitella cell is relatively insensitive to [K](o), but behaves like a hydrogen electrode. K(+) and Cl(-) effluxes from the cell were measured continuously, while the membrane potential was changed either by means of a negative feedback circuit or by external pH changes. The experiments indicate that P(K) and P(Cl) are independent of pH but are a function of ...

Phytochrome-mediated germination of very sensitive oospores.

The light receptor and its mode of operation were studied in photosensitive oospores of Nitella furcata subsp. megacarpa (Allen emend. Wood). Brief pulses of light activated maximal germination of post-secondary dormant oospores removed from lake sediments. Fluence response data at 12 wavelengths were used to construct an action spectrum for germination. The shape of the action spectrum with it...

Increased Irritability in Nitella Due to Guanidine

Guanidine applied to Nitella may lower the threshold of E.M.F. required to produce electrical stimulation and may give rise to trains of action currents. Its effect thus appears to be somewhat similar to that observed in animals. Rapid action currents are produced as well as "square topped" action curves and transitional forms. These effects may be due in part to increased protoplasmic conducti...
